At SLS, we’re committed to making a tangible difference, and this year, we want to spotlight an exciting initiative that turns laboratory plastic into something meaningful: our Plastic to Purpose scheme.
What is Plastic to Purpose?
Our Plastic to Purpose initiative transforms laboratory plastic waste into valuable, practical products. By recycling your SLS pipette tip boxes, you can reduce your lab’s carbon footprint, support a circular economy, and ensure plastics are responsibly repurposed rather than ending up in landfill.
Collected tip boxes are recycled into a range of useful items, including retail food baskets, street furniture, building materials, and roadside kerbs, giving your lab plastic a meaningful second life.
How It Works:
1. SLS will provide you with the containers necessary to manage your SLS pipette tip box waste effectively.
2. We will empty the container either weekly or fortnightly, with waste being compacted for efficient transportation.
3. The waste is transported to the regional recycling facility.
4. Using a conveyor-system, the waste is segregated into different waste streams.
5. The segregated plastic is shredded into pellets or granules.
6. The granulated plastic is moved to an injection moulding facility as raw material for new products.
