Changes to Delivery Charges

Over the course of the last decade, SLS have been consistent with providing deliveries to our customers at a minimum cost to them.

We have weathered the storm of Brexit, Coronavirus, the subsequent impact on the global supply chain and now we have the energy crisis upon us. It is therefore with deep regret that after 10 years of maintaining our cost for a standard delivery, we have no choice but to increase our prices to cover the increased costs of this economic climate. 

The following changes will be made to our freight/delivery charges with effect from 1st January 2023.

Please note that customers with pre-existing contracted delivery agreements remain unaffected.

SLS Break Ground On New National Distribution Centre

Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS) are excited to announce plans to move to a new, state-of-the-art National Distribution Centre based on the Fairham Business Park development in Clifton, Nottingham.

The new multi-million-pound facility is three times bigger than the current SLS site and will ensure the company’s plans for continued growth can be achieved for many years to come.

Once the building is complete, SLS will invest a further £3.5m for an extensive “fit out” process including new offices, mezzanine levels, and warehouse automation.

A Wave of New Bio Research Focuses on Male Fertility

Find out how OHAUS lab equipment is used by male fertility researchers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 60–80 million couples worldwide currently suffer from infertility. It varies across regions of the world and is estimated to affect 8–12 percent of couples worldwide.

This has led to more than just personal strife and big business for fertility clinics; it has led to a wave of biological research on the causes, diagnoses, and treatment of infertility. The focus of the medical, scientific, and academic communities has been shifting as the latest research shows that between 45 and 50 percent of infertility cases are thought to stem from factors that affect men, and the problem is worsening.

While female infertility rates have actually decreased in recent years, those of males have risen, and not among older men as might be assumed.

The fertility rate in men younger than age 30 has decreased worldwide by 15% in the past 25 years.

Tips for safely heating laboratory glassware

Heating laboratory glassware still requires care, even where products are designed specifically for use in such an environment.

There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, not all laboratory glassware will be of the same specification.

For example, borosilicate laboratory glassware provides a far lower coefficient of expansion than other glass types such as Soda-Lime glassware, which is also commonly used in the lab.

While products in the latter group are still suitable for a range of applications, it is important to consider the chemical suitability of the glass itself when subjecting it to heat.

Secondly, not all laboratory glassware is manufactured to the same quality standards.

Even within a category such as borosilicate glass, the quality of the raw materials used and key factors like the consistency of glass thickness can vary, with premium laboratory and scientific glassware brands such as Duran, Wheaton, Pyrex, and Kimble offering more reliable heat resistance.

Finally, the way laboratory glass is heated also has a big impact on safety, regardless of the product used. Here are some tips for safe glass heating to follow in the lab.

A Scientific Laboratory Show & Conference to remember!

With over 1,200 in attendance, this show was a special reunion for many!

Important Changes to Merck Wet & Dry Ice and other Freight Charges

Due to recent changes implemented by Merck we, regretfully, must increase our Merck Wet & Dry Ice Charges with effect from May 1st.

The new Ice Charge of £38.00 will be applied from this date.

Merck have also removed the threshold for free deliveries for all customers.

From May 1st, all deliveries, regardless of value, will be subject to a delivery charge of £24.00.

SLS Donates to the British Red Cross for Ukraine

We have recently donated £1000 to the British Red Cross, to support their Ukraine Crisis Appeal.  

The donation was a result of fundraising at our recent National Sales meeting which raised £380. The company matched this donation and then increased to £1000.  

A big thank you goes to all who contributed at the NSM and our thoughts go out to everyone affected in the war in Ukraine.

SLS Lab Basic Pipettes Included in Bioskills at Home Kits

In August 2020, our SLS Lab Basic single channel pipettes were used by Nottingham Trent University in their "Bioskills at home" kit.

With limitations on access to laboratory time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the kit was developed to create opportunities for first year undergraduate students to develop these skills using online support resources to guide their activities and build communities of learning.

The FoilPeel is an example of how efficient our Microplate Sealing Films are, it's laminated seal is compatible with polypropylene plates and can be removed from polypropylene plates by peeling, even with a plate which has been removed directly from -80°C storage.

FoilPeel forms a complete seal to a plate enabling very low temperature uses, including very low temperature storage, and high temperature uses, such as PCR (when used with a pressurised heated lid).

SLS Raise Over £700 for Rainbows

As usual, we decided to fundraise for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People instead of sending Christmas cards last year.  

For the last ten years, many of us have decided to save the money that we would spend on sending Christmas cards to colleagues and instead make a donation to Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. The company supports this program with a corporate donation and each year we have been able to offer this incredible organisation contributions of several hundred pounds.  

This year we raised £718, which is a fantastic amount, far surpassing last year's total of £480.
