Education Product Manager

Position Summary:  

The role of Education Product Manager is responsible for the effective selection and positioning of the SLS Select Education portfolio including management of data and activity associated with existing products and identification and creation of new products on the business system.  

Working as part of the Product Management Team within the Marketing Department focusing on SLS Select Education, this role involves engagement with suppliers and the sales team to ensure we present the right products in our catalogues, websites, and other publications effectively.

Reporting to the Senior Product Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and quality of product data and play a key part in developing publications and other outgoing marketing collateral including curriculum links, catalogues, lab lists and product selection for brochures. The Technical Support Officers will report into the Education Product Manager.     


  • Manage the SLS Select Education portfolio of products and brand strategy to ensure our offering is effective for our target market through ongoing evaluation of product sales and product data
  • Manage the supplier relationships in conjunction with the Technical Support Officers working on improving the terms we are offered on these ranges of products
  • Identify exclusives and ensure these are effectively managed and promoted both internally and externally to our competitive advantage
  • Work with the Senior Territory Sales Managers to set our market pricing and promotional pricing to ensure our competitive edge is maintained whilst driving margin improvement
  • Liaise with suppliers when price support is required by the sales team
  • Support the technical team with appraisals and ongoing professional development initiatives
  • Work with the Marketing Manager, Sales Representatives, and the Technical Support Officer to provide the lead on the scheduling of promotions, including the selection and presentation of the product selection
  • Use appropriate data to make decisions on product selection for catalogues, websites, and promotions
  • Act as lead on the proofing process of SLS Select Education marketing collateral ensuring the accuracy of our content
  • Assist with re-sourcing exercises working with the Sales Team, Technical Support Officer and Purchasing Department
  • Test and determine the legitimacy of curriculum and exclusive product ranges in conjunction with the Technical Support Officer
  • Support the SE sales team at exhibitions, workshops and conferences with technical demonstrations including occasional customer visits
  • Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of our technical information provided in our marketing activity, including websites and catalogues:

Identifying gaps and/or errors in the existing marketing collateral

Identify areas for product expansion through an ongoing review of the different science curricula

  • In conjunction with both the Product Management team and the Marketing Team, act as lead on the creation of effective publications and promotions that reflect the identified strategies and objectives of the business
  • Where required, provide product training to other members of the SLS Select Education team
  • Communicating with suppliers to gather product specifications, data and digital assets required to answer customers enquiries and add the data to our Product Information Management System
  • Ensure continuous dialogue is maintained with the sales team and the sales team marketing representative to keep abreast of current market conditions
  • Ensure marketing activity is visible to all teams ahead of their launch including the sales team, technical support officers and the customer service team
  • Act as a connect to purchasing, assisting with suggestions on stock and re-order levels as well as MOQs and support the Customer Service Team with lead time improvements
  • Any other reasonable activity as identified by the Senior Product Manager    

Attributes and skills required:

  • Educated to degree level in a science subject or alternatively a number of years’ experience of working in a laboratory environment
  • A marketing qualification would be an added advantage
  • Written and verbal communication skills – should be good or excellent
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of school science equipment – e.g. experience as a School Laboratory Technician or a science graduate with a demonstrable flair for practical science
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the suppliers and brands that make up the education portfolio
  • Very confident in the use of Excel & Word – training on in-house software packages will be given
  • Comfortable handling of large amounts of product data acquired from a variety of sources
  • Highly intuitive when faced with unfamiliar apparatus including software based products
  • Full UK driving licence – not essential but is desirable as there is occasional requirement for travel around the UK
