Six Ways to Increase Sustainability in Your Research Lab

As the global community continues to tackle environmental challenges, scientists have become increasingly aware of the need to implement sustainable practices in research laboratories. Due to the resource-intensive and energy-consuming nature of their operations, laboratories need to address sustainability concerns by taking specific steps to minimise their environmental impact.

1. Electricity consumption:

Reduce electricity consumption in your laboratory by powering down idle devices and implementing socket timers for automated shutdowns during non-operational hours. Use motion sensors to efficiently control lighting, ensuring illumination is activated only when necessary. These simple measures contribute significantly to a more sustainable and energy-efficient research lab.

2. Water Conservation:

Mindful water management is essential in the lab. Avoid unnecessary water wastage during experiments and cleaning, and promptly address any leaks to ensure responsible and efficient use of water resources within the research facility.

3. Waste Management:

Implement a comprehensive waste reduction strategy by optimising product usage, minimising surplus orders and excessive packaging. Establish clear and accessible recycling programs and promote a culture of reuse whenever feasible.

4. Increase Equipment Lifespan:

5. Optimise your processes:

When acquiring new laboratory equipment or supplies, consider their environmental impact. Look to obtain as much information as possible about a product’s lifecycle, from raw material right through to end-of-life. This approach will enable you to make more conscious choices which align with your lab or organisation’s sustainability strategy.
