Biochem/physiol Actions
FES regulates the growth and differentiation of neurons, hematopoietic, vascular endothelial and epithelial cell lines. Inactivation of this gene leads to suppression of human renal carcinoma cell proliferation, and thus, might have potential as a therapeutic target. It is a highly regulated oncogene, and in transgenic mice, its up-regulation leads to tissue hyperplasia, hemangioma formation and oncogenic transformation of fibroblasts. It however, acts as a tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer (CRC), where it is inactivated due to promoter methylation.
General description
FES is a protein-tyrosine kinase, which was first identified as a homolog of transforming oncogene in avian and feline retrovirus. It is a 93kDa protein, which is expressed in endothelial, epithelial, myeloid, vascular and neuronal cells.
