Magnesium chloride hexahydrate has been used in wash buffer for the purification of protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.It has been used for the preparation of extracellular (Ringer) solution for juxtacellular recording of single neurons in freely moving rats.It has been used as a supplement to study effect of desiccation on bacterial viability.

Reconstitution of membrane processes; Strongly enhances the vinblastine-induced tubulin self-association; Component of Dulbecco′s phosphate buffered saline for tissue culture; Component of culture media for Pseudomonas.
